I just finished reading the most influential book on exercise in my life: “Basic Steps to Godly Fitness.” Crafted with simple instructions and humor, this book was written by American Women’s Fitness Specialist and certified personal trainer, Laurette Willis, the founder of PraiseMoves.
This easy-to-read book is essential if you are searching for ways to be both physically and spiritually healthy. It guides the readers to learn the right eating habits, what food to eat, and how to spot fad diets. I remember I used to follow a type of diet that guaranteed quick weight loss and overemphasized one specific type of food. It did help me reduce weight quickly, but it also caused me some side effects – dehydration and skin rashes. A quick fix is never a wise decision! As they say, “Knowledge is power,” and with knowledge, no one can fool you to buy into any fad diet (or any fitness products or services, for that matter) that you won’t need!
In her book, Willis suggested a shift to “a new paradigm.” Instead of using the USDA’s Food Guide Pyramid, she introduced a new food plan – the “Food Circle,” bringing the attention of the reader to the center of the circle, where nutrient-dense foods are highlighted, instead of the top of the more familiar Food Pyramid, where foods to be used sparingly like fats and sugar are placed.
Towards the end of the book, Willis talked about how she came up with PraiseMoves, the Christian Alternative to Yoga (Discover how the author experienced the danger in yoga! Be warned!). This gentle stretches and strengthening form of exercise is designed to physically move us to better health and flexibility while moving us spiritually to get closer to God (instructions, illustrations and benefits of each PraiseMoves posture, PLUS a guide for fasting, a 21-day Step-UP program, basic recipes, and more, are included in the book). After all, I Cor. 6:20 says, “you were bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
