Do you truly know what Yoga is? Well, most of you will say, “Of course I do!” You probably go to your Yoga class religiously… I also know that you and your Yoga class have a relationship with one another. In fact, I’m sure that it has helped you to find a peace in yourself that you have never known before. Most people find that Yoga is an extremely peaceful way to keep themselves in shape and flexible, well into their older years. However, perhaps there is deeper meaning behind your Yoga class?

Yoga is over 5,000 years old. That’s right. If Yoga were to have a birthday, you’d probably set something on fire lighting all of the birthday candles! Your Yoga class actually originated from the Hindu religion. Yoga was used as a means to obtain physiological and spiritual enlightenment. So, the next time that you’re in your Yoga class, realize that it is used as a central means to Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism religions, and has influenced other religions and their practices all over the world. Your Yoga class is the result of thousands of years of spiritual enlightenment through physical harmony and perfection.

What does this mean for you and your Yoga class? Well, if you are a committed practitioner of Yoga, and attend your Yoga class regularly, then you can be referred to as a yogi. If you are a man, then you are a yogin. If you are a woman, then you are a yogini. So, not only do you have some new words to flash to the instructor of your Yoga class, but you can actually partake in a discussion. You can ask them which path that your Yoga class is focusing on.

There are four main paths to Yoga. Karma Yoga is a path of Yoga which is focused upon duty, without thought to the reward. It is meant to teach that one can attain the love of God by performing your duty in an unselfish manner. Raja Yoga is the path of Yoga is focused on relaxing the mind through meditation, “awaken” yourself with the universe around you, and to eventually achieve enlightenment. Jnana Yoga teaches the four methods to salvation. It is a path of Yoga focused around knowledge, and it supposed to help you to know oneself and your place in the universe. Finally, there is Bhakti Yoga. Bhakti Yoga is meant to focus your thoughts upon your devotion, and your peaceful and selfless love of God. So, as you can see, there is a worldly and deeply rooted history behind your Yoga class.

So, what does your Yoga class mean to you now? Well, first of all, you are participating in a 5,000 year old meditation technique. If it is utilized by so many religions as a method to obtain physical harmony with their mental state, then perhaps it is one of the best ways for you to do the same. I have found that so many people find different things in their search for relaxation and stress relief through the various means and methods available to them. However, there is always a positive result that is found by those pursuits. The difference is that now you will understand the focus that your emotional and mental state should be at during your Yoga class.
