If you need a personal trainer, then you might already know what you need to be looking for. Alternatively, you might not know where to start.

Here’s what you need to consider when choosing your personal trainer

1. You’ll need to establish what you want a personal trainer for. If you’re looking for healthy weight loss, then you’ll need different exercises to someone who want to put on weight, or be a faster runner.

2. You might already have specific aims that you want help reaching. You might want to wear a certain pair of jeans again, be able to keep up with your children, or finish stronger in the last few hundred metres of a 10k race.

3. You’ll want to choose a personal trainer with a good reputation, and one that will be able to help you meet your goals.

4. Qualifications are important too, and you’ll need to know that your trainer actually knows what they are talking about. You won’t want to perform the wrong exercises, or risk injuring yourself.

5. You and your trainer will need to determine how often you’ll need to meet. Perhaps you’ll benefit from several sessions a week, or maybe just a couple of times a month will suffice.

6. It’s important that you get on with your trainer, but you don’t want to spend more time chatting than exercising. You might be better off with a trainer who doesn’t talk much, so that you get the most benefit from your training sessions.

7. As well as giving you the exercise help and advice you need, your personal trainer will be able to talk to you about your lifestyle and diet, and recommend changes, so that you can help yourself to meet your targets.

8. If you’re lacking in motivation, then you’ll want a trainer who will inspire you. You won’t want to let them down, no matter how cold and wet it is, or what’s on TV.

9. Your trainer might set easy to reach goals, to keep you on the right track, so, if you struggle to stay focussed, why not see if your trainer can keep you on the straight and narrow?

10. You won’t want to choose your personal trainer on cost alone. It’s important that you get the trainer with the right qualifications, experience and knowledge to help you reach your goals. You won’t want to waste money on somebody who isn’t really helping you.

Now you know what to look for, you’ll be able to choose the right personal trainer for you.
