Hiring a trainer is a very personal decision. You will be spending quite a bit of time with the person, so be sure that you will get along well before signing on with them. When you are interviewing someone to be your personal trainer, you need to ask them for the references of people they have worked for. You also want to check their credentials so you know where they received their training to do the job right.

If you have any special needs, you will want to discuss that with them and know before you hire them just how they plan to work with your needs. Also, question them about the cost of their sessions and all aspects of how long you expect to train with them. Ask them to put everything in writing so you will know exactly what is expected of you and the trainer. If they are not willing to work around your schedule, you should consider going elsewhere.

Spend enough time with the trainer so you will know if the person is going to be willing to listen to you as far as your wants and needs. If this person is an individual contractor, you need to know if they have liability insurance.

A good personal trainer will sit down with you and map out a plan for your success. They should also be able to assist you with a nutrition plan. They should be able to track your progress so it can be discussed at regular intervals and make an informed decision if you need a change in your program.
