The Changing Face Of The Personal Training Economy

A lot of people are talking about the “economy” and the global downturn. One day things are getting better, one day it’s getting worse, the question is does it matter to the average personal trainer? The most common answer is yes I believe! The problem is that the global downturn can generate an environment where it is OK to fail at any enterprise and use this as an excuse.

The biggest problem with the fitness industry and particular personal training is that for years it was seen as a luxury, nowadays it is actually becoming more affordable to more people but the recession has meant that the “luxury” excuse is becoming the most widespread reason for business failure out there. We all have to deal with unfortunate circumstances in life and that is not for anybody to judge or question, but there are people out there running very successful and thriving personal training businesses by being adaptable and perhaps more importantly offering excellent value for the investment made.

There is a big difference between value and cheap, I don’t believe that automatically lowering prices is the only way to go but it seems that it some cases, there is a price war with trainers rather than it being a matter of service and likability. I personally don’t get into “I’m cheaper than that person” conversations because I believe deep down that it shouldn’t be 100% about the price, yes budget and value are key components but isn’t the reality based on results and a better quality of life?

My experience has taught me that people are still looking for the luxury of personal training, we just need to be smarter in where we look and instead of devaluing our service, we should focus on maintaining and improving the quality of our service.
