Cardio Machines and the Wii – What’s the Difference?

Just a few days ago while starting my workout, I got to thinking about how similar the Wii is to the typical cardio machines you see in a gym. Often you see televisions in front of these machines and people moving in one direction for extended amounts of time day in and day out.

With a Wii, you stand in front of a television and perform movements that are choppy and can perform it for extended amounts of time.

Both are exercise options but I think there are better alternatives.

So why is there no outrage about treadmills and elliptical trainers? Is it just because the Wii is marketed to children?

Personally, the only machine I use is a stationary bike for interval training from time to time, the rest of the time it is bodyweight and resistance training. If more and more people started training that way, I can guarantee you that you would see many less injuries, and many more fit people walking around (and a lot less fad diets).

The cardio machines and Wii are very similar in that they are supplements to a training program, not the center of the universe. What I mean by that is for your workout program use them as ‘bonus’ exercise not the main course. Use exercises that demand a lot more energy to perform like bodyweight exercises and high intensity weight training (very short rest breaks).

And I haven’t even touched on cost. You can get a full home gym for less than the price of a Wii, and way less than a treadmill or other cardio machine.

To me it seems like a no brainer, but hey, I’ve been called crazy before. Here are some examples of very affordable and highly effective methods of cardio. I call these my cardio ‘machines’:

Kettlebells

Bodyweight

Snowshoes

Free weights

Sprinting (feet)

A stationary bike where the harder I pedal, the more resistance it applies.

When it comes to cardio, use the most advanced machine on the planet (your body) and build around that.
