I have been on a long journey to get fit and then teach fitness and it seems one goal that most people have in my business is to one day participate in a marathon. In the book “Marathon: You Can Do It!” by Jeff Galloway, a running instructor and Olympic athlete, he gives information and advice to those who are veteran or aspiring marathon runners. In this book which is a run/walk/run program, you are given information such as it is alright to walk a little while participating in a marathon. Through out Galloway’s book you will find information on plans for various goal-time plans for veterans and beginners and also a variety of run-walk systems.
I had made up my mind to participate in a marathon from coaching given by my sister but still felt a little apprehensive even though I had taught fitness for many years. I still found the thought of being in a marathon rather alluring which is the reason why I purchased Galloway’s book. In this book I was introduced to many inspirational success stories of those who participated in marathons. In addition, helpful information such as local running groups which can help along a marathon and advice on race-day training.
At the beginning I was a little weary at Galloway’s strategy and felt it was sort of cheating but I felt I would give it a try. Within a month of reading “Marathon: You Can Do It!” I enrolled in a road runners’ club which is active in holding charity races throughout the year. Exactly seven months after I read the book I participated in a marathon.
I do feel that the book was really helpful but I do not believe in all of the run/walk/run concepts given in the book such as you should do some walking within your first mile or two. To me this defeats the purpose of what I entered a marathon in the first place, to give it all I’ve got! I will have to say that this book does what it says it will do and help you get to the finish line. According to Galloway, today’s runner enters marathons to socialize, for amusement and for personal achievement. It really doesn’t matter if people criticize you if you run during a marathon because this is not about them anyway, this book is a helpful guide and if you have ever been doubtful as to finishing a marathon, this may help you. This book sells on Amazon.com for $ 12.91 and has gotten excellent reviews there from those who read it. One reviewer says that it presents a very realistic approach to marathon running.
