Zone Diet – Realistic Choice for a Low Carb High Protein Diet

Compared to other low carb/high protein diets like the Atkins or Scarsdale diets, the Zone diet may be the best choice for sensible weight loss.

The Zone diet is far less restrictive than these other low carb diets because it promotes eating regular meals with fewer dietary restrictions than the other two diets mentioned.

For example with the Scarsdale diet you banish many foods for life – potatoes, pasta, dairy fat, bread, desserts. Also, intake is roughly 600 calories daily which is painful for most. You will lose weight but is it worth starving and all the misery that comes with it?

How will you lose weight on the Zone Diet?

Basically you’re only eating about 1300 calories daily with a mix of 30% protein, 40% carbs and 30% from fat. The average adult burns about 2000 calories daily (not including exercise) so you’ll definitely lose weight if you follow the plan.

You can still enjoy eating many foods, which is a thumbs up to the Zone diet and a psychological benefit sorely needed by dieters when considering any diet. For example, the Zone diet does not deny people ALL carbohydrates, but simply limits their use. Dieters are encouraged to sharply curtail their intake of pasta and potatoes.

At the core the Zone diet requires you set up ‘Food Blocks’ that tightly control the 40-30 30 ratio. This is the challenging part of the diet – conforming to the strict mix of food groups is essential to lose weight and not be hungry all the time. There are plenty of menu books and even pre-packaged meals you can order online.

Will the Zone Diet work?

The real question is will YOU make it work. The diet works just fine, the food mix and caloric intake guarantees weight loss. This diet works because it balances your love of food and enjoyment of eating with the need for controlling food intake.

One criticism is that the Zone diet is complicated and confusing. It’s really not. You will need to plan ahead and understand the food blocks to be successful. Big deal. It seems a small price to pay for a long term diet system that works so well.
