Positive Thinking and Your Fitness Goals

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford

I found myself contemplating this quote a few times this past month and also found it to be a common theme with several people I’ve spoken with recently. Your attitude and thought process directly affect your results in every facet of your life. We all know this, but what does that mean in regards to fitness?

Everyone agrees that a fitness program should progress in difficulty over time. Generally, we think of this in terms of adding more reps, weight, intensity, etc. But to progress physically, you should not only be constantly challenging your body, but your mind as well.

Can you find the power within your mind to overcome a physical challenge?

Then, can you connect your mind and your body to make them both stronger simultaneously?

If the answer is no, then you’ve convinced yourself that you CAN’T (when, really, you can) and your physical progress will be limited. Ask yourself these questions next time you are having a tough time with your workout – or getting yourself to DO the workout – and know that with a strong mind/body connection, you will ultimately overcome the challenge.

This journey is not just about losing weight, getting in shape, or whatever your general fitness/wellness goals are. It’s about building a foundation of positive thinking that can overcome any negativity in life. If you embrace that your success is only limited by your mindset, you will reach all your goals and then some!
