When a Mormon missionary goes out to serve a mission it is usually for two years. They put their lives on hold and dedicate all of their time to serving people and preaching the Gospel. Their schedules are jam-packed. They get up at 6:30am for personal scripture study, and then they spend the day proselyting and are back home and in bed by 10:30pm. The schedule is designed to keep a missionary on task and focused on the work of preaching and serving others.
Before a missionary enters the mission field it is important that they are in good physical shape. There is a lot of walking and bike riding done in the mission and if a missionary is in poor health they will suffer. The results can be blisters, exhaustion, and even a trip to the hospital. When a missionary enters the Missionary Training Center they are given time each day to participate in physical activity. The Church understands the important of being healthy and encourages the missionaries to workout.
The only time a missionary can exercise in the mission field is if they wake up 30 minutes earlier and work out before the day begins. Many missionaries completely give up exercise while on their missions and end up coming home weighing a bit more than when they left. It is important that missionaries learn to add exercise to their daily schedule. Whether they are young or old, all missionaries benefit from having a workout program during their mission.
Getting up 30 minutes earlier each day will keep a missionary fit and feeling healthy. They will also discover that they will have increased energy and emotional strength to tackle their rigorous schedule each day. Having a set routine to follow can help a missionary stay on track with their health. It also helps to have a companion that is also willing to get up early and be a workout partner. Being in good physical shape will help missionaries become better missionaries and have the endurance to serve faithfully and the determination to work hard during their entire two years in the field.
