Hello, this is Danny Hamil and I’d like to share with you some tips on things you should do before you start exercising. Joint pain has a direct effect on almost everything that we do in our lives: whether it be a simple task of getting out of bed; and that can be a difficult task if you are afflicted with joint pain, peeling a banana for your breakfast cereal, walking to the dining table, or running a marathon.

Joint pain and arthritis, with it’s many variations and names afflicts us as we age. We can’t stop the aging in years, but we do have control over many of our body parts and how they function as we grow older. The alternative of getting old is not very appealing. I, for one, am not ready to take the eternal dirt nap. Nor am I ready to become immobile; and, I am sure you are not either. Exercise is one of the most important things that we can do to stay active and mobile. I am reminded of the old adage: the more you do the more you want to do; and, the opposite is true as well: the less you do, the less you want to do. Are you ready to exercise and reduce your joint pain and become a more active person?

If you have not done any exercise in a long time, you need to start slowly. If you push yourself too hard you can overwork your muscles and this will aggravate your joint pain. Joints do not move by themselves. Muscles and tendons move the joints and the stronger the muscles and tendons are, the better and easier the joints will move.

Before you begin your exercise, consider these tips:
-Apply heat to the joints you will be working before you exercise. The heat will increase the blood flow and reduce any pain that you may have in the joints, as well as relax the joints and muscles. This can be done with heat treatments, hot packs or a shower. The treatment should be warm, not hot, and for a duration of about 20 minutes.

-Warm up by moving your joints, gently at first. Do a range-of-motion exercises for about 10 minutes before beginning your exercise.
-Exercise with caution. Go slow and easy and if you notice any pain, take a break. Sharp or severe pain may indicate that something is wrong. Slow down if redness or swelling occurs in the joints.
-Trust your instincts. If your muscles have not been exercised in a while, go slowly. If you listen to your body you will enjoy your exercise and not overdo it. The length and intensity of your exercise program will increase with time. As your muscles strengthen, your joints will move easier and you will find yourself being more active. Hospitals, clinics and health clubs offer special exercise programs for people with arthritis. Check with your doctor before beginning your exercise program.
