Getting physically fit can be quite a challenge, and it’s even more challenging if you’re trying to find a good personal trainer. Well, if you’re seriously considering hiring a personal trainer to help guide you in your physical goals, you may find these tips very helpful.
A Good Personal Trainer Will:
1. Evaluate your starting point: An extensive discussion is in order before starting an exercise program, and your personal trainer will ask you about your physical condition, medications, and your expectations. Especially your goals.
2. Create a personal plan to fit you: Your personal trainer will create a fitness plan that will include these elements: warm-up, flexibility, strength training, cardiovascular, and cool-down. Your workout time and intensity will be determined based on your level of fitness.
3. Monitor your progress: A positive technique used by trainers is monitoring your progress. Seeing how far you’ve come since you started is very helpful when charted as a graph and can be a great boost to your self confidence.
4. Speak your everyday language: Communication is very important here, as you want to understand your trainer. A good match is the trainer that speaks on your level of education, for example: patella versus knee cap or edema versus excess fluid between tissue cells.
5. Take your concerns into account: A good personal trainer will understand your concerns and will not force you to get on the balance beam if you’re afraid of falling off. Instead, he or she will walk you through the steps towards your goals, not force or push you.
6. Explain the benefits of your movements: Knowing the benefits of your movements and the specific muscle groups you are working on can give you greater assurance and will motivate you to repeat them.
7. Reassess your milestones: If your trainer finds that your milestones are coming up too fast, or you’re moving too slow, reassessment may be necessary to make sure you are accomplishing your set goals. Concrete milestone markers are a part of monitoring.
8. Encourage you: There will be days when you may feel you’re not making any progress or may feel you’re too tired to work out, too busy, had a schedule change, or just don’t think it worth the effort; a good trainer will motivate you and keep you from quitting.
9. Empower you: This is a real benefit not accounted for in the beginning of your personal training. A good trainer will play a major role in assisting you with your sense of self confidence and can be a contributing factor in raising your self esteem from the knowledge and experience gained through your relationship.
These are not lofty expectations, as I do speak from experience and there are some good trainers out there. If you can find someone with these nine quality features, you will definitely have a better chance of sticking with your program after the training sessions are over. You will get your money’s worth and the rewards are outstanding!
