I came across Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength, by Bill Phillips and Michael D’orso, a few years ago at a point in my life when I really needed it. My physical state needed real repair and I must admit the before and after pictures of the people in the book really drew me to it. As anyone know, when you are dealing with a weight issue looking at others and their transformations to a fitter and healthier life is inspiring and that was what this book was for me truly inspiring.

The Body for Life Competition, as told through the book, is the real foundation of the before and after pictures in the book. The competition was for 12 week and included prizes for winners in each category. Although I did not enter the contest, I did in fact follow the eating plan laid out in the book and began seeing positive results.

I liked the fact that Body for Life not only had helpful instruction on how to perform certain exercises in the gym but pictures as well. The great thing about this book is that it teaches you to make the best use of the exercises so you can get the most out of them in as little time as possible. In the book 20 minutes is all that is needed in a cardio workout session. Strength training session lasts about 45 minutes. Full instructions are given on each session so all the guesswork is taken out of how to perform a certain exercise.

I also liked the section on foods because Body For Life had meal plans all laid out all you needed was to go to the grocery store and purchase the food. This made the plan really simple but I didn’t like the fact that with foods like lean fish and turkey ( which are more expensive than the meats I’m accustom to buying) made my grocery bill go up. In addition, the amount of protein needed in each meal and the amount of servings you are suppose to have made an apparent need for supplements.

At the conclusion of the 12 weeks I did this program, although I did not come away from it looking like the before and after photos in the book, I did gain strength and build muscle. I will conclude by saying I would recommend this book the meal plans are a bit may add to your grocery bill but if you are will to invest it then it will definitely be a good investment in your overall health.
