The True Value of a Personal Trainer

There is no doubt that getting in shape is hard work. Despite the claims we see on television that we can achieve a lean and fit physique by taking some pills or in little as “10 minutes per day”, the truth is that personal fitness requires consistent hard work. Actually, the “10 minutes per day” claim is close to the truth, but while most people focus on “10 minutes”, the real key is “per day”.

For most people, sticking to a regular workout regimen is tough. It is in our nature to minimize the amount of effort needed to complete any sort of task. Exercising isn’t really “needed” to survive. It’s hard work that seems unnecessary. It takes deliberate, conscious effort to force ourselves to exercise daily.

This is why getting a personal trainer can be a very effective way to make sure you stay on track with your fitness goals. If left to our own devices, we may not feel too guilty if we skip a day or two of exercise. But if you were to hire a personal trainer to come to your house three days a week at a scheduled time, you can bet that you will be working out during those time periods!

This is similar the psychological technique of acquiring an “accountability partner”. If you are held accountable for your actions by someone else, you will be much more likely to follow through with those actions.

One thing that is important about working out with a personal trainer is good communication. You should regularly talk with your trainer about what is working for you and what isn’t. This can include immediate concerns during the workout. If the trainer forces you to perform exercises which make you uncomfortable or might hurt you, you should stop immediately and tell him. He is not a drill sergeant; he is simply someone who is there to help you maintain a consistent exercise schedule and maybe to teach you a few new exercise techniques.

You should also communicate about how your body behaves during the days following a workout. If some of your muscle groups are still sore, and you believe that you should let them rest a few more days, you should tell him this so that you can focus on a different set of exercises. Your personal trainer cannot tell how your body feels, and often he will design your exercise routine based on how his own body feels.

Getting in shape can be an enjoyable process. By getting a personal trainer that you like, you can often overcome the mental hurdles that hold many of us back and turn exercise into more of a social event.
